"Hamilton Music Notes"
by Ric Taylor

It was only March when Cara Kelterborn released her debut CD, Timing Is Everything… And I Lost My Watch. As Forever Means Never, the acoustic–emo music Kelterborn offers in the vein of Bright Eyes or The Lindsay Diaries, seems to have struck a chord with local fans—particularly those involved in the Y108 $10,000 Band Challenge, in conjunction with the Spring Music Festival, where the singer reportedly garnered $10,000 in prizes.

This week she brings word of a new recording and a gig with some like– minded bands. “Apparently I’ve become a promoter, but not by choice,” laughs Kelterborn on the collection of bands she’s gathered for a gig this week. “The best thing I have recently done is that I won the $10,000 band challenge! I’m due back in the studio September 20! I’m taking a year off school to tour and play mad shows to get my music out there. “I’m really excited about my new music, but I wanted to play shows, and really the only way I know how to do things is to do them myself. So I’m asking bands I actually like (to join me).”

“We were invited to play this show by Cara,” smiles Cyanide Kiss’ singer/ guitarist Rob McKenna. “It is our final show before the release of our next CD.”

While the dual CD/DVD debut release from Cyanide Kiss turned heads as an inventive approach to indie releases, it’s been over two years since we’ve heard from the band. With a clutch of new songs and plans to record a new CD—tentatively titled Chemical—CK hopes to debut some of the new material in a live setting.

“We took a short hiatus from playing shows in Hamilton to try and focus on the Toronto and Waterloo scenes, but are now trying to incorporate all of our audiences,” reasons McKenna.

“The new disc has a much darker focus. The major difference with this album is that it was more of a full band project. “Our Here album/DVD was almost entirely written by myself. At this show we will be playing a bunch of the new material to gauge people’s responses.”

“Cyanide Kiss—their music is pretty cool, alternative, but mellow vocals,” offers Kelterborn.
